Who may qualify for the Canadian Experience Class?

Under IRCC’s current requirements, qualifying work experience must generally:
- Be in a National Occupational Classification occupation classified under TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3
- Have been acquired while the candidate was authorized to work in Canada under temporary resident status
- Have been performed while the worker was physically present in Canada for a Canadian employer, including where the work was performed remotely
- Include the actions in the lead statement and most of the main duties of the selected NOC
- Be paid work for wages or commission
- Total at least one year or 1,560 hours during the three years before the application
Applicants can meet the hours requirement through qualifying full-time work, an equivalent amount of part-time work or eligible work for more than one employer.
Self-employment and work performed while the candidate was a full-time student generally do not count toward the minimum CEC requirement, subject to limited exceptions under current IRCC policy.
There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class. However, eligible Canadian or foreign education may increase a candidate’s CRS score when the applicable requirements are met.
